Water plant safety: 8 ways Watercare Innovations puts safety first at your operation

By Wendy Losper | Blog | Comments are Closed | 15 Nov, 2021 | 0

As a water treatment company, safety lies at the heart of our operation. Guided by our Zero harm policy, we strive to provide products and services that are guaranteed by implementing internationally recognised safety and quality standards.

In this post, we take a closer look at eight ways in which we serve with safety. These are:

1. Monitoring and dosing panels
2. CoolQuench touchless water dispensing
3. Water treated for safe environmental discharge
4. Safe antiscalant chemicals
5. Feasibility of water projects
6. ISO accreditation
7. SHEQ team
8. Clarifier technology

1. Safety is a priority with our monitoring and dosing panels

Watercare Innovations’ Monitoring and Control Panels have been designed to meet the technical requirements of industrial water systems.

The product design focuses on safety, keeping the wet compartments separate from the electrical side. Remote 24/7 control and monitoring of key water management parameters enabled through our online WaterBizz platform and/or SCADA connectivity provide our clients peace of mind.

2. Designing safety into the CoolQuench for touchless water dispensing

CoolQuench potable water system

The CoolQuench Q15C provides 1875 employees with 8l of SANS 241 quality drinking water per day

The CoolQuench potable water plant produces SANS- and WHO-compliant drinking water from complex and contaminated water sources. This innovative equipment combines a variety of technologies that removes heavy metals and other dissolved solids. It also destroys bacteria and microbes.

A built-in chiller ensures permanently chilled water. Our new models now have touchless dispensing, an additional safety feature built into the units.

3. 56ML water treated daily for safe environmental discharge

Nyala water treatment plant

Watercare Innovations has a proven track record of building, operating and maintaining water plants that treat complex mine water to a quality that’s safe and compliant for environmental discharge.

Mine water treatment remains the responsibility of the mine even after the mine has closed. The discharge water is mandated to meet the quality standards set out in the Department of Water Affairs’ Water Use License issued to the mine for excess water discharged to the river. The number one core operational philosophy of our water plant division is safety!

4. Safety benefits of solid-state anti scalants?

Watercare Mining is proud to have CT9109S, a solid-state antiscalant, in our range. Not only is the CT9109S highly cost-effective due to the concentration of the active component in the product, but it is also significantly less hazardous than the solution equivalent for transport and storage. It has the additional benefit of improved safety when handling.

5. Is feasibility delaying your water project?

engineered water treatment solutions

A key phase in the development of water-related projects is feasibility. Feasibility is the point that determines whether the project moves forward or not.

Watercare Nakela will complete the feasibility of your water-related project. The feasibility includes:

  • Site inspection
  • Review of the existing water balance (if available)
  • Water sampling and analysis
  • Overlaying of a salt balance (if required)
  • A comprehensive feasibility report with recommendations for a turnkey project
  • High-level design of the proposed water project
  • Budget proposal demonstrating potential ROI, high-level CAPEX and OPEX scenario(s)

6. Proudly ISO Accredited

We are proud to be accredited with ISO 45001:2015 and ISO 9001:2018. ISO 9001:2015 accreditation demonstrates our ability to consistently provide products and services that meet our customer, statutory and regulatory requirements.

We aim to systematically enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the ISO 9001:2015 system. ISO 45001:2018 sets the minimum standard of practice to protect our employees against health and safety risks in the workplace.

7. Meet the SHEQ team

Watercare Mining’s health and safety accreditations and standards are implemented and maintained by a strong SHEQ team headed by Misheck Makahamadze, ably supported by our SHEQ administrator, Nicoline Koppel, and three safety officers, Thabo Kgatlhane, Nhlamulo Freedom Chauke and Molefi Seseng.

Nicoline proudly achieved her SAMTRAC qualification within two years of joining the company. Thabo joined us 11 years ago and has achieved the COMSOC 1 and 2 qualification.

Molefi and Nhlamulo have earned their diplomas in safety. While Molefi and Nicoline have a passion for business, Thabo and Nhlamulo are football fanatics.

8. Combatting acid mine drainage

Integrated high-rate clarifier for treating acid mine drainage

Watercare Innovations’ high-rate clarifier technology is applied for the removal of toxic metals and other suspended solids from acid mine water. The safety and quality of the treated mine water is compliant with Water Affairs’ Water Use License specifications and is safe for discharge into the natural ecosystem.
